Life quest of america12/31/2022 I looked at the woman’s face and thought of the mothers of all the friends I had lost, the end of their children’s suffering marking the beginning of theirs. They are part of the price of war – a price I have seen paid by friends who returned home with PTSD, in the 21-gun salutes at the military funerals of those who could not bear the pain, in the psychologist’s waiting room at the VA, in the faces of the active-duty members at the drug treatment centre who preferred the deadening of chemical dependency to the flashbacks. “Deaths of despair” go hand-in-hand with modern military service. There were many: a friend who was so drunk he drove his car into a concrete barrier, dying instantly another who overdosed on heroin one who shot himself. I thought of the people I had known who had survived war but died after. She died later, in a drunk driving accident…” I was raised in a military culture with a deep respect for service members. I tried to follow in her footsteps but was discharged out of basic training, deemed medically unfit for service. My mother served 20 years in the Air Force. They said it would get easier, but it didn’t. It’s almost the anniversary of her death. She leaned her head back against her headrest and the knife dropped to her lap. “Why do you want to die?” I asked her bluntly. “I came here to die and like everything else in my life it didn’t even work.” She looked straight at me, her eyes so full of pain. I saw the knife, and you looked upset, so I wanted to check-in.” She looked at me, annoyed by my presence. Unsure of what to say or do, I stood there awkwardly. My first instinct was to call the police to save her, then I realised how absurd that would be. The woman had intended to commit suicide-by-cop. Police SUVs can always be found parked along that street, officers chatting outside. The Portland Police Bureau holds its martial arts training in a building next to a convenience store. Now I have to wait for them to come back out.” Her words devolved into choking sobs. “They won’t even do their job and shoot me! I stood there waving this knife around, and the cops didn’t even notice. She gestured with the knife towards the cop cars lining the street. I leaned into her open passenger window and stupidly asked her if she was OK. I could not just walk by as if I had not seen anything. It bobbed up and down rhythmically in her hand as she cried, sitting in the driver’s seat of her car. I heard her sobs the moment before I saw the butcher knife.

Pankaj udas gazal song12/28/2022 I thought there was something very attractive in her singing and style. “She had an unusual voice which was apt for ghazal. It was the legendary Begum Akhtar’s voice that mesmerised him. Bollywood music played a great part in Pankaj’s development of interest. The composers used a lot of ragas in the music. The film music of 1960s-70s was phenomenal in every aspect. It was here that he would be exposed to Hindustani vocals. He underwent formal training in the instrument at the Sangeet Natak Academy in Rajkot. A young Pankaj was inquisitive and impressed by them but it was the tabla that fascinated him. The youngest of the 3 brothers, Pankaj would attend college functions in Rajkot where his brothers would sing. The exposure to film music and mainly the radio were the other influences,” recounted Pankaj. “The combination of our parents’ interest in music worked on us and we developed a liking. This dedication to music was the first trigger which generated an interest in music among the brothers. This did not restrict his daily riyaaz of the ‘ishraj’. After Independence and the implementation of a new constitution, he took up a job with the Government of India. He learnt the art from one of the musicians in the court of the Maharaj of Bhavnagar. Their father was the first in the family to receive musical training. Though their mother was passionate about singing, it was limited to festivals, family functions and wedding. This was not particularly the case in the Udhas household. Most musicians would be handed a musical instrument in their childhood. One of them being, the ghazal legend Pankaj Udhas. Born into a family of landlords, the Udhas brothers would venture out on a musical sojourn and etch their names in music history.

Leave out all the rest tab12/28/2022 New Zealand will ease into a new “traffic light system” from Friday with regions put into red, orange and green zones depending on vaccination rates and COVID-19 cases. The new Omicron variant is increasing concerns among Maori, but has yet to be seen in New Zealand, or impact re-opening plans. “We experience every systemic failure just by being Maori,” said Ngarewa-Packer. This, coupled with institutional racism, a high mistrust in government and poor health access for Maori living in smaller towns, meant many were slow to get vaccinated or simply left out, Maori leaders say. About 70% of Maori are under the age of 40. Some community leaders blame the low uptake on the government’s vaccination strategy, which included prioritising shots for elderly. Only about 69% of eligible Maori are fully vaccinated compared to nearly 90% of the rest of New Zealand. Like many indigenous peoples, Maori fare worse than the rest of the population when it comes to health and well-being measures. Maori, who make up around 15% of New Zealand’s 5 million population, now account for the highest proportion of new COVID-19 cases, averaging around 200 a day. “The prime minister is intent on opening up before Christmas even if it’s at the expense of Maori.” “It seems like Maori are the most expendable in this country,” Maori Party co-leader Debbie Ngarewa-Packer told Reuters. Some of the world’s toughest pandemic measures enforced by the South Pacific nation are easing on Friday New Zealand to ease COVID measures this week despite Omicron threat – PM, with businesses reopening nationwide after Ardern’s government abandoned its elimination strategy in the face of the contagious Delta variant.ĭomestic border curbs in the pandemic epicentre Auckland are due to end mid-December and international borders restrictions will loosen progressively from January.īut as businesses and New Zealand’s majority ethnic European population largely welcome the reopening ahead of the Christmas holidays, some Maori fear further marginalisation.

Motogp 202012/28/2022 Looking forward to the LTMOQP2 (the last two minutes of QP2) as much as the race itself. I expect to see a lot of offs on Friday and Saturday, riders getting all antsy to get out there and find out if they’ve got anything. Dovizioso’s collarbone is healing from a MX crash during the hiatus. He could easily leave here on July 27th with 50 points and a discouragingly big lead in the championship. Go Jack Boy! Show ’em Euros how to ride a neffin’ motorcycle!īottom line, heading to Jerez for Round One of 2020: Marc Marquez is in full health, two functioning shoulders, and has two wins and a second here in the last three years. I suppose if I’m writing for people in Australia and Canada I should be nicer to them, say nicer things about them. One thing is clear heading into 2020: MotoGP, despite its denials, despite its claims to be a global sport, is a Spanish-language sport. The series, which typically starts its season in late March, has suffered due to the virus, and is probably not done suffering. And how disinterested Americans are in MotoGP to begin with. MotoGP 2020 has, apparently, arrived, with Round One lifting off this weekend in Jerez. It must be something to be an ex-pat or English-speaker living abroad watching the big bad USA being brought to its knees by a virus most of the developed world has managed to contain. How most of Europe is prepared to ban Americans over health concerns. Martin is an Alien-in-Waiting.Īs an abashed American I find myself wondering about how the rest of the world views our country and our leadership.

Archie sonic the hedgehog 112/27/2022 Sonic ends up saving the universe, but it is unfortunatly reset with alterations, which are seen in issues #166-167. Sonic and Knuckles try with the help of Rotor to prevent this catastrophe. However all is not well as the timeline is in danger of collapsing into destruction. Knuckles has attained the rank of Guardian and is (unofficially) married to Julie-Su. In this future reality, Sonic is king of Knothole and married to Sally. The backstory of StH #131-144 introduce the famous Mobius: 25 Years Later storyline, providing readers with a glimpse into the future. It's unknown how much of the elements introduced in the old continuity still remained. The comic, from there on, took place in a world that bore a closer resemblance to the games, but with several concepts being carried over from the old continuity. The crossover event culminated in the fabric of Sonic's entire Multiverse collapsing in on itself, which resulted in Sonic's world returning in an almost completely unrecognisable state, and all alternate realities (excluding the Sol Zone) being completely destroyed and replaced by new ones. The switch to this new canon was initiated in issue 247 when Mobius was hit by the reality-warping Genesis Wave, which in turn led to a 4-month long crossover with another licenced video game-based comic series. The comic officially entered into a new continuity from its 252nd issue onward. The cover of Sonic the Hedgehog #252, the first issue to take place in the current continuity Additional main areas of setting include Angel Island, Downunda, New Megaopolis and Station Square. Since then, other areas of Mobius have been featured in the series. The reason for the Mobian date only being 3237 with the currect retcon is unknown.Īt the onset of the series, Sonic's original home was Knothole Village, a secret woodland base hidden within the Great Forest outside of Robotropolis. However, the date of the Xorda attack was retconned to have occurred roughly twelve thousand years ago from the current Mobian year. Originally, the date the Xorda attacked Earth was the year 0 by the Mobian calendar (during the 21st century by our calendar), and that was known in Echidna theology as the first " Day of Fury". It was eventually revealed that Mobius was actually a future Earth (in an alternative reality), the year being 14,015 AD by our calendar. Sonic had lived on Mobius in New Mobotropolis by the end of the series. While the two continuities are completely different to each other at their core, they are still connected in terms of overall storyline, with an in-continuity reason for the switch.Īt the beginning of the series (in its original canon), the year was 3235, though by the end it was 3237 (due to the relativity of Sonic's "year" in space, in which several months passed while he was gone on Mobius while only weeks passed for him). Initially, the series kept to a single continuity that lasted for the first 247 issues, as well as most spin-offs, before switching to an altered continuity from issue 252 onward. Since then, the series has integrated many elements from the video games, which has led to ongoing story arcs involving, Knuckles the Echidna and others. The basis of the original issues were designed to closely mirror Sonic SatAM, as well as the names and likenesses of Sonic's allies in the Freedom Fighters. Ivo Robotnik and his legion of unquestioning, warlike robots. He is also portrayed as having a deep sense of duty - in the games Sonic treats his ongoing conflict with Eggman as just an opportunity to have a fun time, whereas in the comic he holds a personal grudge against the Doctor and understands his ability to protect the world from this menace.Īlthough Sonic normally goes adventuring by himself in the video games (with the occasional company of other player characters), in the comic he is affiliated with the Knothole Freedom Fighters, a ragtag rebellion that was formed to counter the tyranny of Dr. Sonic is in many ways different from his game counterpart - in the comics, he is depicted as having important ties with his family and friends, a characteristic absent from other incarnations. Sonic is endowed with super speed and a hatred of oppression, which puts him at odds with the nefarious Dr. The main focus of the comic's storyline was the title character, world-famous hero Sonic the Hedgehog.
